    Considering Chulmleigh College for September 2022 entry?
    We are offering a number of small group tours with our Executive Headteacher Michael Johnson, Deputy Executive Headteacher Neil Payne and SENDCO Laura Mackie. After school for those who may not be able to visit in working hours and morning tours for those who wish to visit during a normal school day.  Being able to see the school ‘in action’ provides an excellent window into what we offer here, and with the tours being led by our Senior Leadership Team in a small group environment, you will have ample opportunities to ask any questions you may have.

We follow the government guidance set out in the Primary Framework for the teaching of English (Literacy), and we plan units of teaching for Literacy through an integrated curriculum structure so that there is a real context for the work undertaken. 

From their very first day at school children will be systematically taught the skills they need to be able to read independently. Phonics teaching begins when the children join the Partnership Foundation Stage Unit, and while children are developing their ability to recognise, use and blend letter sounds, they are introduced to the joy of reading through immersion in picture books, big books, stories and factual books.

Reading books for them to take home are carefully graded to ensure that children are being appropriately challenged. We value and recognise the support of parents, and give guidance about how you can help your child to read, both in the early stages and later on, when they are really fluent. We also have extra support available from specially trained teaching assistants for any children who are not making the appropriate progress, believing that early intervention is best.

Our phonics scheme is Floppy’s Phonics which follows 'Letters and Sounds', a systematic approach to synthetic phonics.  For reading, the younger children choose a book that matches the phonic sounds they are learning but are also encouraged to take another book home for shared story time.  In Key Stage 2, most children are on Accelerated Reader and are expected to read daily so they can move through the levels quickly.
